MILL BEND

 

The hike begins at 10:00 a.m. at the gate and entrance to Redwood Coast Land Conservancy's Mill Bend Preserve. From Highway 1, on the south end of Gualala, turn onto Old State Hwy (AKA as Old Stage Rd.). Drive approximately 400 feet and take the first right onto a gravel roadway, drive up the hill a short distance and park by the gate. We’ll walk to the Mill Bend house (where folks can leave their lunches) then take the Toyon Trail followed by the River Rail Trail and Sponge Forest Trail. We’ll walk back to the house and eat lunch at the picnic tables. Folks will also have an opportunity to roam around the restored, historic Gualala Cemetery.

GUALALA ROAD TO GREEN IRON BRIDGE AND GAC HIKING TRAILS

 

Meet at 10:00 in back part of the Gualala Arts parking lot. We will visit the Gualala cemetery and walk one of the GAC trails before hiking along the road down to the green bridge and back. There are some mild elevation changes. We will have lunch at the picnic tables at the Arts Center, and after lunch those interested can view the art shows inside.

 Meet at 9:30 at the parking area behind the Gualala Hotel for a walk around town. On this walk there are many scenic views. We will see views of the ocean from many different vantage points, interesting and diverse architecture and drought tolerant entry gardens, walk on the Gualala Bluff Trail, and see Gualala in a way most of us have never seen it, on foot. This hike is not level, but none of the "elevation changes" are very long. This is a hike without lunch, but there are a number of places in town to buy lunch after the hike.

There are some mild elevation changes on this sometimes shady road that follows the Gualala River.

GUALALA POINT PARK #1

Meet at the Hidden Parking Lot at 9:45 (on westside entrance just left after pulling past fee post.) Or park across the street and cross Hwy 1 if you do not have a pass. Hike to the bluff, go north, and then back to the Visitors Center, walking occasionally on the road, but mostly on trails. After a brief stop on the benches to look at the view of the river, we will take the trail down to the river and under the highway to the campground. From there we will walk through the forest and down to the Gualala River for lunch. After lunch we will walk back to the cars via the road to the campground.

COOK'S BEACH

 

Carpool at the pullout for Gualala business directory just north of bridge at 10:15 or drive directly to the parking area west of Big Gulch Road (north of Gualala after mm 2.16) where you will meet the leader. We will start walking at 10:30. We will walk south along the Old State Highway and the route of the old railroad. We will explore where the Old Milano used to be before retracing our steps and then walking (carefully) north along Highway 1. This is a scenic corridor with nice views. We will do a short loop east of the Highway on Glennen for more views of ocean and houses before walking to Cooks Beach. Cooks Beach is a RCLC project providing public access to a sheltered beach. We will descend to the beach for lunch and then return along Hwy 1 to the cars.

OCEAN RIDGE PARK (NEW)

 

Meet at 9:50 at the pullout for the Gualala business directory and at 10:00 at north side parking lot of Bower Park. This is a different type of Rambler’s hike as we will wander Ocean Ridge Drive, the trails and paths in Bower Park and will zigzag through the disk golf course of the Redwood Coast Recreation Center. We will end up having our lunch at the picnic area of Bower Park.
