STILLWATER COVE/GLEN FORBES MEMORY HIKE

all photos by Bob Rutemoeller

Carpool at the pullout for Gualala business directory just north of bridge at 9:25 and at The Sea Ranch Lodge parking lot at 9:40. Hikers with County Regional Park passes should drive. We will be remembering Glen Forbes today as we first walk south to a bench that has been added in his name overlooking Stillwater Cove. Afterwards we'll hike the interesting bluff section of Stillwater Cove and then return back to our cars. We will drive then to the day use area and park.  We will hike through the beautiful forested canyon, cross a small stream, then up along the ridge until we reach the old Fort Ross schoolhouse and then through the Canyon and down to the Cove for lunch. After lunch we'll return to our cars.  Dogs allowed on leash and hiking sticks helpful for a few steep spots and river crossing. Parking in the first section could be a challenge as there are only room for about three cars so we may have to drop people off and do a shuttle.

Carpool at 10:15 at pullout north of the bridge by the  Gualala business directory. Take Old Stage Rd. to Fish Rock Rd. turning right to follow the signs to the Mendocino County Dump. Park at the foot of the road where the pavement stops where you will meet the leaders.  Starting at 10:30 we will be following logging roads on Mendocino Redwoods property with views of the Garcia River. We will follow and cross several tributaries as we meander along the overgrown logging roads. This hike has some elevation gain and depending on how fast the group is we will be treated to vista views through the trees. Walking sticks recommended. Our exact route each time we have hiked this depends somewhat on changes to the roads as we find them. This is apparently quail hunting season so we are to watch for hunters.

WALK-ON BEACH TO GUALALA POINT PARK A

Bird Rock with Backpack
All Photos by Bob Rutemoeller

Everyone should meet at Highway 1 across from Gualala Point Park at 9:50 so we can arrange carpools. People who have regional park passes should drive. Cars can be left there or at the Hidden Parking Lot. We will walk to the bluff on the public access trail, passing by Sea Pine Beach and walking on Walk-On Beach before retracing our steps and continuing on the Bluff trail north. On the day we will decide whether to walk back to our cars via the Salal Trail and eat lunch at the picnic tables next to the parking lot or in the grassy area next to the new poles or continue on the bluff trail to Gualala Point Park with a lot of options for lunch there.
