SALT POINT/TIMBER COVE

 

Meet at the pullout for Gualala business directory at 9:15 and at Stengel Beach Coastal Access parking area at 9:25. Start at 9:45 at Salt Point State Park. Turn west at Main Entrance and follow road down to ocean where large parking lot and restrooms are.  There is a $6 charge per car so if you have a State Parks pass bring it. Hike the coastal trail along the bluffs north for about 30 min and then return.  If we are lucky the waves will be BIG and beautiful.  We will return to our cars and then continue south to Timber Cove Inn where we will hike their trails, including a visit to the smallest state park in California.  The hike will conclude with lunch at the Timber Cove Inn so please RSVP to Mary Sue by December 9th so she can give them an idea of how many people might be coming.

STILLWATER COVE/PEACE OBELISK

Carpool at the pullout for Gualala business directory just north of bridge at 9:25 and at The Sea Ranch Lodge parking lot at 9:40. Hikers with County Regional Park passes should drive. We will be hiking in three distinct areas. First we'll drive south to visit the smallest state park in California, the 93-foot-high "Peace Obelisk" sculpture by the late Benjamino Bufano, a renowned San Francisco sculptor and to hike a few of the interesting trails that the Timber Cove Inn has created. Then we will drive to the day use area of Stillwater Cove and hike in the forest. One of the bridges has given out so we may need to ford the stream in two spots. We may see fringed corn lilies in bloom. Last we will  hike the interesting bluff section of Stillwater Cove and eat our lunches on the spectacular rock formation (think mushroom and cow) and then return back to our cars. Car pooling is important for this hike.

We will drive then to the day use area and park.  We will hike a beautiful forested loop, crossing a small stream, and perhaps seeing fringed corn lilies in bloom. After returning to our cars, we will drive south to the Timber Cove Inn where we will hike their trails, including a visit to the smallest state park in California, the 93-foot-high "Peace Obelisk" sculpture by the late Benjamino Bufano, a renowned San Francisco sculptor. The hike will conclude with lunch at Alexanders. They have a new chef so the menu on their web site as I send this out could change.

We will drive to the day use area of Stillwater.  We will hike in this beautiful forested fern-lined canyon, visiting the old Fort Ross schoolhouse.  We will return to our cars and then continue south to Timber Cove Inn where we will hike their trails, including a visit to the smallest state park in California.  The hike will conclude with lunch at the Timber Cove Inn. Please let Harmony know by the beginning of the week if you plan to attend.

Ode to Mary Sue

Today is the day to be of good cheer,

Because Mary Sue Ittner’s birthday is here.

She stands straight and tall, surveying it all,

Looking forward  to planting bulbs in the fall.

With Bob on her right and faithful Foxy on lead,

There is nothing and no one she can’t supersede.

The Oscar she could win for “The Radio” play will have to wait for another day,

For life is calm  & sunny up on the ridge and that makes any kind of fame not worth a smidge.

With recycling and trash to be done,

We know Mary Sue will help make it fun.

The Ramblers will follow wherever she may go,

For good times and lovely hikes are always sure to flow.

So raise your glass for a toast

To Mary Sue, our leader we love the most!

Hike the coastal trail along the bluffs starting at left side of parking lot. Continue north for about 30 min and then return.  We will return to our cars and then continue south to Timber Cove Inn where we will hike their trails, including a visit to the 2nd smallest state park in California.  The hike will conclude with a lunch celebration at the Timber Cove Inn
