STILLWATER COVE/PEACE OBELISK

All photos above by Bob Rutemoeller

Carpool at the pullout for Gualala business directory just north of bridge at 9:25 and at The Sea Ranch Lodge parking lot at 9:40. Hikers with County Regional Park passes should drive. We will be hiking in three distinct areas. First we'll drive south to visit the smallest state park in California, the 93-foot-high "Peace Obelisk" sculpture by the late Benjamino Bufano, a renowned San Francisco sculptor and to hike a few of the interesting trails that the Timber Cove Inn has created. Then we will drive to the day use area of Stillwater Cove and hike in the forest. One of the bridges has given out so we may need to ford the stream in two spots. We may see fringed corn lilies in bloom. Last we will  hike the interesting bluff section of Stillwater Cove and eat our lunches on the spectacular rock formation (think mushroom and cow) and then return back to our cars. Car pooling is important for this hike.

After taking in the views we will return and eat our lunch near the blow holes. Eventually we will retrace our way back along "Huckleberry Row" where those who want to may stay and pick huckleberries can and others can return by the road to their cars. Carpools should be done in a way to accommodate pickers and non-pickers.  This is a relatively flat hike with only minor elevation change.
